Tom Ford Launching Womenswear Line

Fashion Scene
by Oakridge, November 20th, 2009

We miss Tom Ford. Who doesn’t, really? The man left Gucci and Yves Saint Laurent in 2004 (after a corporate buy-out) and his name is still synonomous with creme de la creme fashion–despite the fact he hasn’t designed for women since leaving the glam houses’ hallowed halls.

After FiveHis ascent to Creative Director at the company was nothing if not destined. Joining the company in 1990 as Womenswear Designer, it took Ford only two years to become Design Director, and just two more to become Creative Director of the whole shebang in 1994. He then, to the amazement and awe of all fashion followers, assumed the position of Creative Director of Yves Saint Laurent Rive Guache and YSL Beaute in 2000, after the Gucci Group acquired the company. It was while he was at Gucci and YSL–bastions of chic and glam–that the world truly fell in love with Tom Ford.

And so it was with great gasps of disappointment that we weathered the let-down of his leaving both brands in 2004. We watched with baited breath as he designed eyewear, a fragrance and beauty collection, and then a luxury menswear line. And now, yes, finally, it has been confirmed that Tom Ford will once again design for women.

Despite the recession, despite global decline in luxury buying, Ford is well, fording ahead (pardon the pun). Domenico De Sole, Ford’s longtime business partner, is hunting for financing for the ladies’ line. Rumour has it the line might even be ready for Fall 2010. Doubtless, the world will love it, and once again, Tom Ford will regain his title as the king of fashion.
