Resort 2010: Top Picks

Style
by Oakridge, December 21st, 2009

swimcoThe glitz, the girls, the glamour. Resort 2010 had us daydreaming of the getaways we’ve planned for the upcoming year. We scanned the collections for our favourite looks, and present them here, for you.

Top Picks from Resort 2010
Anna Sui’s signature summer clothes, with no set tone or theme. We are still loving trenches (especially hers, with ruffles) and the tuxedo jacket.

Alexander McQueen’s splatter effects, brushstrokes, and line-drawing prints.

Francisco Costa for Calvin Klein’s off-the-shoulders ‘T dress’.

Chado Ralph Rucci’s lemon yellow and pink chiffon summer dresses with extra tucks and stitches-as per the designer’s signature tailoring.

The easy, flowy-yet tailored-combination of masculine and feminine at Victor & Rolf.

Happy dreaming.

High-Tech Meets High Fashion: Designer Phones

Cool Stuff
by Oakridge, November 6th, 2009

Apple iPhone at Oakridge Centre

When fashion designers lend their skills to technology, we take interest. And when said fashion designer is none other than Giorgio Armani, we do research.

Armani–he of the celeb-filled entourage and one of the largest privately owned fashion companies in the world–has completed his third phone for Samsung. Calling it “functional” yet “elegant”, Armani said: “I simply aim to create a Smartphone which is not only an elegant tool but also functional and useful, perfect for today’s managers.” The phone is bronze–perfect, says Armani, for coordinating with his suits.

Other designers and fashionistas have joined the high-tech meets high-fashion trend. Prada joined forces with LG in 2007, and Betsey Johnson, Anna Sui, Diane von Furstenberg and Versace have all worked with Samsung.

Others, such as Ralph Lauren, Tommy Hilfiger and Donna Karan, are turning their craft into iPhone applications.

Top Picks: Fall 2009 Ready-to-Wear

Runway-worthy: Femme de Carriere

We’ve picked, we’ve panned. Find some of our top picks from Fall 2009 here.

3.1 Phillip Lim
Youthful 60s London inspired Phillip Lim for fall. We love his gentle bohemian dresses, marabou and goat-hair coats, and slim suits. Our top parka pick is his, with rabbit-fur sleeves.

Anna Sui
We adore the Belle Epoque-French for the “beautiful era” that started in the 19th century-as much as Ms. Anna Sui, who’s Fall 2009 collection riffs off this time period. Proust, 90s Paris, and the rooms in Yves Saint Laurent’s country retreat also played an inspirational role. There’s lots of black, plus velvet trims, rose prints, soutache trim, and, our must-have: Feathered hats, in plum, aquamarine, or black.

Badgley Mischka
Mark Badgley and design partner James Mischka started their show with all-black day looks, but thankfully transitioned into what we went for: Dresses. Every one was designed with a solid shot of glamour: one-shouldered gowns, satins, a sequined column, and our favourite: the molten-red one-shoulder satin, belted number.

Balenciaga
Nicolas Ghesquière melded print, tailoring, and draping. Where did he get his inspiration? The Balenciaga archives, late-sixties scarf prints, and a later sari-inspired collection. This collection was done in satin, printed silk, and dévoré velvet. We need the shoes; each one is an artful combination of all his collection deliverables, stacked on a walking-boot tread sole.

Runway-worthy: After Five

Helmut Lang
Nicole and Michael Colovos showed us slim distressed denim, zippers, and sometimes slouchy, always comfy toppers. They’re either all-black or mostly grey-and-white combos covered the arms and the legs-even beneath long tunics and short-sleeves-and was topped off with oversized scarves or snoods piled on top.
