Knickers for Kicks

Look of the Moment

The Bay

We’re seeing a new trend, an even more daring take on the leg-loving pantslessness. Pantslessness meant seeing models, celebs, and pop stars in tailored jackets, tunic tops or dress shirts long enough to be worn alone–sans pants. But Miuccia Prada, Alexander Wang, and Duckie Brown are taking the Fall 2009 trend even further for Spring 2010. Are you ready to show off your underthings this summer?

Prada showed thigh-high boots paired with furry shorts for Fall 2009, and her haute hip waders raised the bar in terms of statement footwear. For Spring 2010, models sashayed down the Prada runway in knickers and bare legs. Apparently, Miuccia has a “passion for knickers”, and when she wasn’t sending models out in underthings, she sent them out in imitations: short biker shorts. And Miuccia’s not alone. Alexander Wang and Marc Jacobs showed them for women, too, and Duckie Brown did them for men.

We’re almost afraid to ask what’s next.

(More) Big Fall Trends for 2009

Style
by Oakridge, October 9th, 2009

We’d done our research, we’d perused all the top shows, and delivered our list of five big fall trends for fall. But we can’t ignore these five more–and you’ll be glad we didn’t.

Five More Trends for Fall

Fabulous Forties
We adore the Forties: Glamour, glitz, and movie stars. True, tailored madness. Thank goodness designers such as Dolce & Gabbana, Alber Elbaz for Lanvin, Aquilano.Rimondi, and Alexander McQueen agree. They sent out 40s-inspired looks including skirts, jackets with enhanced shoulders, and double breasted dress-coats that any MGM tailor would be proud of.

Biker Babes
Suddenly, being bad is good again. This season sees biker-inspired toppers, cropped or shrunken and often in black leather, taking the spotlight. We saw it at Balmain, Alexander Wang, and Roland Mouret.

80s Hits
Marc Jacob did 80s New York nightclub nostalgia, Gucci’s Frida Giannini did sharkskin suits, and Antonio Berardi did crystal-studded mini dresses. Donatella Versace delivered, of course, the sexiest party dresses.

Ruche It
It’s elegant, it’s fresh, and it harkens back to Grecian goddess dresses. It’s ruching-and we love it. From mini skirts to evening dresses to jodhpurs, outfits at Balenciaga, Donna Karan, and Oscar de la Renta were draped and gathered.

Classic Cuts It
Camel hair, pinstripes, double-breasted jackets, tweed. Designers from Christopher Kane-yes, even rule breakers were following age-old tips this season-to Miuccia Prada, Ralph Lauren and Consuelo Castiglioni for Marni delivered classic pieces to be invested in and worn again and again.

More Top Picks from Fall 2009 RTW

Gap at Oakridge

Where there’s fashion, there’s passion, and we’re loving these looks from Fall 2009 RTW.

TOMORROW: RUNWAY TO REALWAY

Tuleh
We’re big fans of Bryan Bradley’s loose Winter-white pants, menswear touches and lively fabrication additions: sequins, and casual pieces, like hoodies, done in luxurious jacquard. His roomy, puff-sleeved blousons are also big on our list.

Alexander Wang
This CFDA/Vogue fashion fund winner has been thinking about how his clients are growing up. A slightly more sophisticated collection featured tailoring, luxury, and slightly more edgy pieces: very coordinated ensembles including matching bags, belts and shoes, jacket sleeves with cubed metal rivets, and foxtail-fringed leather.

Zac Posen
Zac Posen riffed off the ’40s and the Victorian era for Fall 2009 because these decades are known for “sculpting clothing”-his passion, of course. As hoped for, Posen showed mostly dresses, but also ventured into other pieces in varied fabrics: gingersnap plaid, violet moiré silk, and metallic jacquards. Despite mixed reviews, mostly panning Posen’s departure from attainable red carpet glam, we liked the collection.

Thakoon
Thakoon Panichgul’s Fall collection can be summed up as a more safe, retail-friendly foray (come to think of it, Wang’s was, too). It featured elements of his past work, and bowed to his passion for hints of surreal. We’ve added his cascading ruffle-patterned gown and built-in bows to our must-have list.

Temperley London
Alice Temperley ventured onto the Silk Route-and detoured into Japan-for Fall 2009. We adore the origami detailing, high-waisted genie pants, and jeweled necklines tunics balanced by sharp tailoring, and gold-studded leather jackets and coats-all catering to Fall’s edgier, stronger woman.

Resort 2010: First Top Picks

Style
by Lindsey, June 26th, 2009

Check out some of our top picks from the Resort 2010 collections.

  1. 3.1 Phillip Lim’s Pretty Pirate
Think faded florals and lamés, antique lace and patchwork denim. Luckily, the jumpsuit is back, and suits with double-breasted jackets and rolled-hem shorts are destined to be big. Lingerie elements are here, too, and fancied-up trench coats-in floral sequins, sheer polka dots, and even lizard-stamped linen.

  2. Alexander Wang’s American Socialite
All-American sportswear takes centre stage: denim, T-shirts, chinos and chambray. Plus Wang’s hit LBDs-though the designer stuck to a less is more philosophy this season, showing fewer than in past collections.

  3. Calvin Klein’s Easy Breezy
Francisco Costa did this collection in weightless, often diaphanous fabrics-including transparent nylon, gray organza, and silk Lurex-and many pieces were structured to fall away from the body.

  4. Oscar de la Renta’s Frenchie
Tweedy bouclés, matching berets, and specific pieces, such as a belted tunic vest and matching skirt, a shirtdress, and a cropped jacket worn with jeans, all conveyed not just a love of the French, but a fille straight from Paris.
