Key Looks for 2010: Happy New Year!

As the breathtaking fashions and amazing styles of 2009 fade into memory, we welcome 2010 by embracing trends that are certainly going to be sticking around, making them all unquestionably practical additions to your closet.

Key Trends for 2010
The Amazonian Warrior
The military fashion trend has come and gone but it has evolved into a reliance on the more savage, tribal influences this season. Metal and wood-beaded detailing on tunic dresses and tribal motifs, with drapes of fabric, are all the rage this spring. Of course, let’s not forget gladiator sandals, studded belts and metal accessories, which are great details to add on for any urban warrior in the city.

Teenflo menswear-inspired

Just Like One of the Boys
From the classic Le Smoking of Yves Saint Laurent to the modern day Sartorialist look, menswear has a strong influence in the world of women’s wear and will continue to make an impact. The boyfriend jeans with blazer is the perfect current casual look, but a woman’s tailored suit is a chic look that is sure to have passers by taking notice. Teenflo at Oakridge Centre has a beautiful collection of well-structured blazers and lightweight trousers (pictured) to flatter any body type without looking too drab. Also, Teenflo’s modern day women’s suits are intricately tailored and, with the store’s wide selection of handbags and accessories, it’s a perfect one-stop outfit shop.

DKNY sparkle and shine

Splashes of Shine and Shade
If prints and patterns aren’t your thing, hopefully splashes of bold block colours are. Bold colours along with sequins are great statement trends for the upcoming season. It screams confidence but can also be demure, especially when worn with black to help neutralize the colours and shine. DKNY at Oakridge Centre has a fabulous new collection (pictured) that perfectly demonstrates the boldness of the colours and sequins but remains very modest. Besides that, DKNY has an assortment of fun dresses and tops in brilliant block colours with sequin detailing. Definitely worth checking out.

Tie Dyed for Everyone

Look of the Moment
by Oakridge, December 30th, 2009

Perfect Match scarves

Look out 80s, the 70s are back. Tie dyed tops, bottoms and dresses tripped down the runways.

Tory Burch believes the look can work for anyone, no matter what their age, and thinks it looks modern yet nostalgic. Bluemarine did a caftan that, although not so modern, managed to fit perfectly in the nostalgic category. And Proenza Schouler’s Lazaro Hernandez and Jack McCollough applied the dying technique to sleek, sporty styles-giving it new life and firmly planting it in the modern category. Meanwhile, at Rodarte, Kate and Laura Mulleavy put together their ragged looks from bits of fabric clearly riffing off the flower child era.

If our eyes don’t deceive us, it appears this summer will be, once again, the summer of love.

Top Dos and Don’ts

  1. Do pair a tie-dye tank with a proper suit; contrast is everything
  2. Don’t wear a caftan unless you can accept looking larger
  3. Do pull off a tie-dye scarf (try one from Perfect Match)
  4. Don’t wear it as a bandana
  5. Do feel free to experiment, no matter what your style

New Year’s Eve Dressing

Time to get your dress-up on! New Year’s Eve is the one night of the year during which it is perfectly acceptable–even expected– to be as glamorous as possible.

This week, I went to Oakridge Centre to see what I could find for New Year’s and I thought I would dedicate this blog to finding the perfect New Year’s outfit.

After Five black dress

After Five was a perfect place to start. There are literally hundreds of dresses to choose from. Like this BCBG number - very Hervé Leger.

The best way to accessorize a body con bandage dress? Earrings…big ones. Thankfully, Blue Ruby just opened their newly-remodeled store. It is the perfect place for accessories. Look at all the earrings to choose from.

Blue Ruby earrings

And that’s just a small sampling. I also found a fabulous cuff, or two…

Now the only question left unanswered is do I get my make-up done at M.A.C. or at Murale? Maybe both?

Have a safe and happy New Year!

Milan Men’s Fashion Week

Style
by Oakridge, December 28th, 2009

Boys'Co Celebration

Milan’s men’s fashion week is almost here. Here, who’s doing shows, and why we’re excited.

Who’s showing: John Galliano is showing his diffusion line, Galliano is holding a presentation, which makes us think he might launch menswear under the same name, Alexander McQueen is coming to the catwalk-diverting from his film-showing last season (we’re simply dying to see what he does with men’s shoes–after the alien heels he showed for women in Spring 2010), and Pringle is coming back to the runway. We’re sad to hear he’s not doing a runways show, but thrilled that Roland Mouret is debuting his first menswear line in Paris. He reportedly said that men can’t walk down a runway.

Who’s not: Missoni and Moschino aren’t doing shows this season (sigh).

Hot menswear terms this year
Meggings: mens’ leggings
Heavage: mens’ cleavage
Man clutch: a small bag meant just for men
